About
I run Education Host.
I'm Nick Williams, Managing Director of Education Host — a specialist education hosting and software company. I manage the company as a whole: its strategy, products, infrastructure, operations, customers and growth.
Education Host has focused exclusively on education since 2011, supporting universities, colleges and schools across the UK, North America and Europe. The company designs, develops and operates its platforms — Student Web Host Manager, Cloud Pulse, Cover Manager, AI Labs — alongside hosting and managed services, working with developers and specialist partners, on infrastructure we run ourselves, including our own OpenStack cloud.
My role is leadership: setting the strategic direction, owning the product and service roadmap, holding overall responsibility for infrastructure and operations, and making the commercial and financial decisions that keep the company growing sustainably. The building is done by our team; the direction and the accountability are mine.
I got here through the technical route — a first-class Computing degree, enterprise BI delivery, data consultancy and hands-on infrastructure work — and I stay close enough to the technology to lead it properly. The experience page tells that story in order.
I'm based in Droitwich Spa, Worcestershire. The quickest ways to reach me are email and LinkedIn.
Leadership scope
What sits on my desk
Company strategy & priorities
Setting Education Host's direction: where the company focuses, what it says no to, and how education-sector needs shape the plan.
Product & service roadmap
Owning the roadmap across the platform portfolio and services — what gets built, improved or retired, and in what order.
Developers & specialist partners
Leading the developers and specialist partners who design and build the company's software, and keeping that work aligned with the strategy.
Hosting & OpenStack infrastructure
Overall responsibility for the company's hosting estate, including its own OpenStack cloud infrastructure, run with specialist consultancy support.
Operational & service responsibility
Accountability for the services institutions depend on daily: monitoring, support, maintenance and the operational standards behind them.
Customers & partnerships
Owning relationships with universities, colleges, schools and partners — from first conversation through delivery and renewal.
Commercial & financial oversight
Responsibility for pricing, contracts, budgets and the financial health of the company.
Long-term growth
Building a company that compounds: sustainable growth in products, customers and capability rather than short-term wins.
Principles
How I lead
Lead from understanding
I don't ask the team to build anything I couldn't reason about myself. Technical credibility is what makes strategic decisions fast and honest.
Systems over heroics
If a service depends on one person remembering to do the right thing, it isn't finished. Good companies make the right thing the easy thing.
Plain language first
Strategy only works when the people delivering it — and the customers depending on it — understand it. Jargon is a cost, paid by the listener.
Evidence before superlatives
Show the running platform, the institutions served, the service that stayed up. Claims are cheap; operated services aren't.
